School visit safety information
Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa is a remote and dynamic environment. Please review the park’s safety information with your students ahead of your visit to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
Staying safe
By taking a few simple steps, you can keep yourself and others safe while exploring the park.
Weather
Uluṟu and Kata Tjuṯa are incredible at any time of year. However, the weather in Central Australia varies quite a bit between seasons.
Please come appropriately dressed and prepared for an outdoor learning experience. Our programs run rain or shine but not if the weather reaches extreme temperatures. Overnight temperatures can be very cold during winter, so be sure to bring some warm clothing with you. Sun hats and sunscreen are recommended all year round.
Extreme temperatures
Central Australia can experience extreme heat between November and March.
Check the temperature before your walk and consider postponing if it is more than 36 degrees Celsius (97 degrees Fahrenheit)
During the summer, temperatures often go over 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) as early as 9am.
Temperatures in the park regularly reach 30°C or more and can exceed 40°C during summer.
Heat exhaustion, dehydration and hyponatremia (low sodium levels in the blood) are very real dangers in the National Park.
To avoid heat-related issues while walking in the park, please read our safety information and tips on how to beat the heat from the Northern Territory government.
First aid and emergencies
The school and accompanying teachers are responsible for providing any first aid treatment. Please bring along your own first-aid kit in case of accidents.
Make sure that any students with medical conditions have their medical plans and medication on hand.
In case of an emergency or incident please ask our staff for assistance:
- ranger guided programs – notify the ranger assigned to your group
- teacher-led visits – contact the Duty manager on +61 (0)429 222 621
- if you are out of phone service – use an Emergency Call Device (ECD).
Make sure that the contact person listed on your FOC Educational Entry Pass has the same phone number as the one you gave when you applied for your group. Keep that phone with you and turned on at all times during your visit in case we need to contact you for any reason.
Please report any incidents to the Cultural Centre on 08 8956 1128. The Visitor Services Officers at the Cultural Centre can assist you with the management of first aid incidents or emergencies.
