Beat the crowds

The Kata Tjuṯa dune viewing area can be crowded at sunrise but is usually quiet at sunset.

Tips for photographers

  • From this vantage point, sunlight doesn’t hit the domes directly at sunrise or sunset, which can make them appear quite dark at times and create dramatic contrast of light and shadow on the domes.
  • Uluṟu is visible in the distance. The sun will rise to the right or left of the rock (depending on the time of year), which guarantees a beautiful shot with a long lens.
  • There can be a lot of people on the lookout platform at sunrise, so bring a sturdy tripod to minimise vibration.
  • To avoid focus on sensitive details of Kata Tjuṯa, aim to capture at least 5 domes in frame at all times.
  • If you're taking photographs or filming for commercial or public purposes, you'll need a media permit.
  • Note: The National Park is a no-drone-zone.
